Dr Ilango works as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon, with specialist interest in Corneal Transplant & Cataract Surgery/Lens Implants at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, West Midlands. After graduating from medical school and completing his Diploma in Ophthalmology in Southern India, Dr Ilango relocated to the UK, and successfully completed the Higher Specialist Training Programme in the West Midlands. His training included work at St Paul's Eye Unit in Liverpool and Leicester Royal Infirmary. During his Higher Specialist Training, Dr Ilango performed hundreds of eyelid/plastic surgery procedures.

Dr Ilango developed a sub-specialty interest in Corneal surgery and pursued this at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He has performed hundreds of corneal transplant procedures, more than 30,000 cataract surgeries and in excess of 6,000 Excimer laser refractive procedures. He is skilled in a range of procedures, including LASIK, LASEK, cross-linking treatments, premium lens implants, ICL/IPCL procedures, and femtosecond cataract surgery. Dr Ilango has undertaken training in femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery. Dr Ilango’s work is regularly published, and his training programmes for junior doctors have earned him wide recognition. He is a Royal College of Ophthalmologist certified Refractive Surgeon (Cert LRS), and has been working as a refractive surgeon with Optimax Clinics since 1996. In addition to conducting research and clinical trials, Dr Ilango has set up an Eye Hospital in rural India, and performs sight-saving eye operations there on a voluntary basis.
